Anybody have a Motorola cable modem?

I used to have a Linksys and ditched it for a variety of reasons.

This one seems to have my internet tubes flowing more slowly.

I am wondering if there are any settings I should change in order to improve the performance.

What you bought is a router, not a modem.

Slower? Is it wireless? Maybe the spot you have it set in is blocked by something. There's not much you can do from the router to speed it up. There may be some profane settings if you pop the hood open, but that's just crazy talk.

No, this is a modem/router combined.

It's a Motorola SBG901.

My old one was a Linksys WCG200.

I can't tell whether or not it is actually slower, or if I'm just paying more attention to speed now that I have this new one.

I was just wondering if there are default settings that I should change.

oh christ - how much was that thing???

Also, I would setup WPA2 security for your network (but only if your computer supports it)

It was $150. It was the only cable modem/router in the entire Best Buy! There were a shitload of DSL ones.

I have a password set up on it. It's some big long one that the accompanying software disc produced.

That security isn't good enough?

Disclaimer: I am not a technical guru, nor claim to be... but think about changing the password that accompanied the modem/router. How many other discs has that password been accompanying??

Just remember to use something less obvious than Iheartbilly :)

It's rare to buy your own cable modem, that's why there's not many in the stores.

What kind of security is that password? It should say somewhere on the screen like "WEP" or "WPA" or something. It's what people have to use to get onto your network. Generally, WEP is very simple to crack... although I doubt your neighbors really care. You might be swatting a fly with a hammer :)

Stim, your cable modem should have five labeled indicator lights
  • power
  • receive
  • send
  • online
  • wireless

Please tell us whether the lights are off, on, or flashing, and in what color.

Also,

1) is your PC connected to the cable modem with a cable or wirelessly?

2) how fast are your downloads now? Download speed is measured in BPS, which means Breasts Per Second. It should be an even number unless you are once again in the grips of your amputee fetish.
